How to Stop Being Broke in Deadlock: Souls and Items
The team with more souls usually wins. Not the team with the coolest plays: the rich team. Here is how to be the rich team.
Where souls come from
- Troopers. Your main income for the whole game, not just early.
- The melee last hit. If you finish a trooper with a melee attack you get all of its souls instantly, with no orb to shoot and nothing for the enemy to steal.
- Denying. When an enemy trooper's orb floats up near the enemy, shoot it first and they lose that money.
- Haunts. Jungle monsters pay out to everyone who damaged them. Shoot their eyes for extra damage.
- Bonus objectives. Sinner's Sacrifice slot machines, the Soul Urn and the Midboss are worth a lot, and they're how comebacks happen.
- Kills. Especially the enemy who is way ahead, because the game puts a bigger bounty on them.
- Breaking things. Crates can hold souls, and Golden Statues give permanent stat buffs.
The shop
The shop has 173 items, and as a beginner you will understand roughly six of them. That's fine.
Items come in three colors:
- Orange weapon items make your gun better.
- Purple spirit items make your abilities better.
- Green vitality items keep you alive.
The cheapest items cost 800 souls, and every tier up costs more. Shops are all over the map, not just at your base, so you don't have to walk home to buy.
The more you spend on one color, the bigger the bonus you get for it, on top of the items themselves. At 4,800 souls in one color that bonus jumps, which players call the 4.8k spike.
Bought the wrong thing? Sell it before you walk away from the shop and you get everything back.
What to buy as a beginner
- Dying a lot? Extra Health. It's boring and it saves your life constantly.
- Need to escape? Extra Stamina gives you more dashes.
- Gun hero? Headshot Booster makes your next headshot on a hero hit much harder.
- Ability hero? Mystic Burst charges up and adds extra damage to your big ability hits.
- Enemy heals forever? Healbane cuts their healing.
Active items
Items with rounded corners in the shop are actives: you press a button to use them. You can only hold four actives at a time, so pick ones you will remember to press. Every enemy Walker your team destroys also unlocks an extra item slot, up to three.
The routine
Farm troopers, melee the last hit, deny theirs, spend your souls, and don't stare at the shop for ninety seconds while your lane dies.
