The Doorman looks like the most harmless person in Deadlock. He is actually one of the most dangerous, and he came to the ritual to catch up with a couple of old friends.

Who he really is

The Doorman is an extraplanar being: an ancient fledgling god and cosmic power who can warp reality and bend space and time. "The Doorman" is a pseudonym, and he says it keeps him grounded in his role. What he really looks like, nobody knows.

Long ago he enjoyed slaughtering and tormenting humans and took pleasure in their fear. Then he decided to experience life on Earth. He disguised himself as a human for a few weeks, got involved with the Baroness Hotel the moment it opened, and has been there ever since. He finds that serving humans has a novel charm compared to tormenting them.

The Baroness Hotel

He serves every guest equally, removes anyone who causes a disturbance, and keeps the same polite manner even with rude people. Lady Geist tests that constantly.

  • Other staff include Jacque and Francis, who runs the lounge.
  • Mirage and Ambassador Nashala are staying there, and Apollo has stayed there.
  • Paradox is kept out, and both Silver and Viper have been thrown out.
  • He remembers every guest.

The patrons are old friends

He calls the City Mother and the Amber King old friends. They know him, respect him, and see his violent side as who he was meant to be. He joined the ritual to see them again, has no planned wish, and intends to go back to the hotel afterward.

Relationships

  • Solomon and Baba both point out that he was supposed to stay impartial. Baba also knows his true nature.
  • Hayes knows her boss, Marlowe, will want to hear about his involvement.
  • Seven wants to uncover his secrets. The Doorman tells him he is miles away from the god he wishes he were.
  • Warden: he knew Warden's parents and calls them failures to Warden's face.
  • Calico and her cat Ava are favorites. Ava would be treated like a queen at the Baroness.
  • Wraith is a friend and a generous tipper.
  • Infernus he respects as a fellow member of the service industry, and apologizes to when he has to kill him.

The short version

A god who chose to open doors for a living, who knows everyone's secrets, and who offers a lovely martini from Francis once the ritual is over.
