Celeste is a unicorn. A real one. She has hidden it her whole life, and she's tired of hiding.

Why she hides

Only her closest friends know what she is. Skeptics don't believe unicorns exist, and some think she glued the horn on. Even in a city full of magic, nobody takes her seriously.

Hiding isn't only about pride:

  • Vampires consider unicorn blood a delicacy.
  • The Paradox organization has tried to steal her horn.
  • Hayes has pointed out that if Celeste were killed, the OSIC would want an autopsy.
  • She knows of a grove that has to stay hidden for its own protection.

So she hides in plain sight at the Coney Island Sideshow, with the people she calls her found family: Karuba the mermaid, Chicken Wing Ted, and a knife thrower named Blockhead Lenny.

Career highlights

She used to close kids' birthday parties with Light Eater until the lawsuits. She was a regular at a glass blower's convention until she added Shining Wonder to her set and they stopped inviting her. She dropped Shining Wonder from the act after too many concussions, and she has no health insurance.

Why she's in the ritual

Lenny sold part of his soul to Wraith to pay off a debt, and Celeste is here to save him. Everyone who knows Lenny has the same opinion: he's always doing a Lenny. Even Wraith, who holds the marker, has a soft spot for him. Celeste hasn't forgiven him for what he did in the bear pit, where he also fought and lost to Lash.

Her friends and rivals

  • Abrams knows what she is.
  • Mo and Krill are close friends.
  • Infernus is a friend of the whole family. She calls him Fern and knows Hank too. She hopes Hank doesn't learn she's in the ritual, because he'd be worried about her.
  • Solomon, whom she calls Saul, knows them as well. Ted is the one who told him about Lenny.
  • Nurse Harrow and Celeste can't stand each other.

She hates hurting people and is genuinely sorry when she kills someone in the ritual.

The short version

A unicorn in a carnival, risking her life for a friend, and finally ready to step out of the shadows. In her words, it's time to show people who she really is.
